Green Power - immediate benefits to customers

Green Power has many benefits including reductions in resource consumption (mostly coal and water in South Africa); reduction in emissions and waste (including ash); reduction in energy losses in transmission and distribution (approx. 11% of SA's electricity is wasted in T&D losses); increased levels (and quality of) employment opportunities; local economic development; diversification.

The main benefit to customers is the certified reduction in the negative environmental and social costs of energy use. Per MWh, corresponding to the energy represented by one TREC, of ESKOM electricity, these include:

Coal use
0,55
ton
Water use 1,35 kilolitre
Ash produced 157 kilogram
Particulate emissions 0,20 kilogram
CO2 emissions 0,9585 ton
SO2 emissions 8,601 kilogram
NOx emissions 4,264 kilogram

Overall, the combined GHG emission impact for 1 MWh of ESKOM power is 1.2 ton of CO2 equivalent. The overall benefits to the country include more stable energy costs to the economy, employment generation, improved environmental conditions and enhanced international status in terms of Climate Change commitments.
